Hoe kies je een motorhelm

Begin bij de pasvorm, niet bij de functies. Helmen komen in hoofdvormen (rond ovaal, intermediair ovaal, lang ovaal) én in maten, en een helm van €700 in de verkeerde vorm beschermt slechter dan een van €200 in de juiste vorm. Meet je hoofd boven de wenkbrauwen, draag de helm 15 minuten en controleer of hij je wangen omsluit en niet los van je huid kan draaien.

Stem daarna het type af op je rijden. Een vaste integraalhelm is de standaard: het lichtst, het stilst en het goedkoopst bij elk kwaliteitsniveau. Kies een systeemhelm als je de helm vaak openklapt (bril, tankstops, praten), een adventurehelm als je routes onverhard zijn, en een jethelm alleen als je je bewust bent van de bescherming die je inlevert.

Geef geld uit aan keurmerk en comfort, in die volgorde. Zoek naar ECE 22.06 of SNELL M2020 bovenop het wettelijke minimum, en steek het resterende budget in de dingen die je elke rit voelt: gewicht, geluid, ventilatie, een Pinlock-lens en (voor woon-werkverkeer en touren) een ingebouwd zonnevizier. Veelgestelde vragen

Wat is het veiligste keurmerk voor een motorhelm?

ECE 22.06 is de meest actuele en complete norm (rotatie-impact, meerdere snelheden, viziertest); SNELL M2020 is het strengst op pure stootenergie en wordt door veel Amerikaanse circuitorganisaties geëist. DOT is het Amerikaanse wettelijke minimum. Een helm met ECE 22.06 of SNELL bovenop DOT is ver boven het minimum getest.

Hoeveel moet ik aan een motorhelm uitgeven?

Een veilige, gekeurde integraalhelm begint rond de €150. Tussen €300 en €600 koop je lichtere composietschalen, veel minder geluid, betere ventilatie en extra’s zoals Pinlock-lenzen en zonnevizieren. Boven de €700 betaal je voor racematerialen en handgemaakte verfijning. Geef uit wat je hem elke rit doet dragen, en koop nooit tweedehands.

Wanneer moet ik mijn helm vervangen?

Na elke klap: zelfs een val op beton vanaf zithoogte kan de EPS-voering onzichtbaar indrukken. Zonder crashes: vervang ongeveer elke 5 jaar gebruik, want zweet, uv en samendrukking tasten de voering en pasvorm langzaam aan.

Maakt het gewicht van een helm echt uit?

Over een uur, ja. Het verschil tussen een helm van 1350 g en 1750 g is klein in de hand en groot op de nek bij snelwegsnelheid, waar de luchtweerstand de belasting versterkt. Touring- en woon-werkrijders merken het het meest.

Wat is een Pinlock en heb ik er een nodig?

Een Pinlock is een antiwasemlens die in het vizier klikt en een dubbel beglaasde luchtlaag maakt. Rijd je in koud of nat weer, dan is het de beste comfortverbetering die er is; de betere helmen leveren er een in de doos bij.

Prijzen zijn richtprijzen en veranderen; gewichten zijn het meest genoemde cijfer voor een medium schaal en variëren per maat. Bevestig altijd het actuele keurmerk en de pasvorm bij de fabrikant of verkoper.
