Why it matters
A neglected chain wears out sprockets, robs power, and can fail dangerously. Ten minutes every few hundred miles keeps your drivetrain healthy and your ride smooth.
Cleaning
- Put the bike on a rear stand (or paddock stand) so the wheel spins freely.
- Spray a dedicated chain cleaner and gently scrub with a soft brush.
- Wipe off the grime with a rag. Avoid harsh solvents; they can damage O-rings.
Lubricating
Apply chain lube to the inside of the chain while slowly rotating the wheel, so centrifugal force carries it outward. Let it tack up for a few minutes before riding.
Checking slack
Find the slack figure in your owner's manual (typically 25-40 mm). Measure at the tightest point of the chain's rotation, and adjust the rear axle if it's out of spec. Too tight is worse than too loose.
