Motorcycle Chain Maintenance: Clean, Lube, and Adjust

How to clean, lubricate, and adjust your motorcycle's chain: the single most impactful bit of routine maintenance you can do yourself.

Why it matters

A neglected chain wears out sprockets, robs power, and can fail dangerously. Ten minutes every few hundred miles keeps your drivetrain healthy and your ride smooth.

Cleaning

  1. Put the bike on a rear stand (or paddock stand) so the wheel spins freely.
  2. Spray a dedicated chain cleaner and gently scrub with a soft brush.
  3. Wipe off the grime with a rag. Avoid harsh solvents; they can damage O-rings.

Lubricating

Apply chain lube to the inside of the chain while slowly rotating the wheel, so centrifugal force carries it outward. Let it tack up for a few minutes before riding.

Checking slack

Find the slack figure in your owner's manual (typically 25-40 mm). Measure at the tightest point of the chain's rotation, and adjust the rear axle if it's out of spec. Too tight is worse than too loose.
